Gertrude's was a lesbian collective that operated a cafe and women's center, which opened in the fall of 1975 and closed in the spring of 1976. We felt safe in the backyard of Gertrude's Cafe. I lived in my own truck in the backyard, and along with my German Shepherd dog, kept watch. I also had access to the bathroom and shower, and offered free photography lessons.
