Mother Kali's Bookstore, Eugene, Oregon, 1976.
Mother Kali's Bookstore in Eugene, Oregon was a new organization when these women were photographed. Feminist bookstores were important safe spaces for women to meet, relax, and find books and music that were often difficult to find elsewhere. In Minnesota, the Amazon Bookstore operated out of two cardboard boxes of books in the basement of a condemned house in South Minneapolis, before the internet made it possible to access a wider range of material. Alison Bechdel, the creator of the cartoon series Dykes to Watch Out For, may have based her fictional feminist bookstore on the Amazon Bookstore.
