Rising Moon welcoming, Aitkin, Minnesota, 1974
Lisyli Hardin and Robin Deeming were two very caring and wonderful Lesbian women who lived at Rising Moon in 1974. Rising moon was an early woman's commune in rural Aitkin, Minnesota. Rising Moon had one small farm house, 160 acres of prairie with a creek close by. New Year's Eve, 1973, the farm house burned down. Lisyli and Robin remodeled the shack to live in.
I visited on weekends when I could, bringing food and helping with chores. There was no phone. I just showed up late on a Friday night and was welcomed.
With low wages and no access to credit in 1973, buying property required cash. Woman-owned land was dream. Being on the land was safe and empowering.
