Rainbow House, South Minneapolis, Minnesota, early 1980s
I often asked women to let me photograph them. These women called their home the "Rainbow house". Women lived together to save money on rent and pay off high interest mortgages.
Sending my film to a commercial lab for processing risked outing my friends. I developed and printed my images, color and black and white, myself, in order to protect our privacy. I dug a room in a partial basement (bucket by bucket) under my house to build a photographic dark room.
