Horse and Joy, Two Harbors, Minnesota, 1978
Getting away from the Cities for a weekend was refreshing and rejuvenating. Lola was a gentle horse. The old mail truck that I lived in for years is in the background.
I lost my photojournalist position in 1976 after being outed as a lesbian while on an assignment to photograph two FBI dogs. It turned out to be a FBI convention. I was "let go" shortly after. When I contacted the other newspapers for work, they just laughed. Being a out lesbian in a small town was not OK. My father was a contractor and gave me one option. Be the first woman to attend and graduate from all white, all male trade school. It was prison sentence with dementors.
